Coach certifications


Hockey Alberta is responsible for the training and development of Coaches for the Hockey Canada certifications throughout the province through facilitating clinics and certification.

Hockey Alberta Coaching Requirements

During the hockey season the Head Coach may not be able to perform their duties 100% of the time due to illness, suspension, or other personal reasons; and having additional coaches with the required certifications, keeps the team properly certified.

​​​​​​​CRAA Coaching Requirements - the below steps are required.  Returning Coaches - Check your Hockey Canada Spordle Account for expired certifications.

1. Coach Application is filled out

  • May be bypassed in subsequent years by indicating interest to Manager of Hockey Operations
  • Pre and Post season Interviews as required

2. Police Information check 

  • Online - Link will be sent via Administrator along with volunteer letter to submit
  • Valid for 3 seasons

3. Respect in sport "activity leader" 

  • Online - Duration 4 hours. Can be completed in stages.
  • RIS "Activity Leader" is DIFFERENT that the Parent course.
  • Valid for 4 seasons

4. Development 1, Trainer/safety, Checking Skills- hockey canada

  • Hockey Canada courses - see chart below
  • Safety/Trainer is only valid for 3 seasons Online - Duration 2-3 hours.  Can be completed in stages.
